There are some decent humbucking P90s out there worth considering (e.g., Dimarzio Bluesbucker, Lace PS-900) that can get rid of that hum and take either a traditional P90 form (e.g., Lace PS-900) or a humbucker form (e.g., Dimarzio Bluesbucker). I love/hate P90s in the sense that some sound absolutely horrible and some sound absolutely fantastic to me. The Ibanez Custom 58s sound really great in a hollow or semi-hollow guitar if you want a cheap but quality upgrade to either an Ibby or a Epiphone Dot. I agree that the pickups on the lower end models (e.g., AS 73 & 93) are lacking but so are the stock pickups in the Epiphone Dots I have tried.īoth Epi Dots and the lower end Artcores sound much better when people put in a new wiring harness and better pickups. Of course if you don't mind the bigger hollowbody models than look at other models as well as the three I just mention are more like an ES-335 type guitar. If you are not adverse to buying used I'd suggest trying to find the AS-103 used, or the older Korean AS-200 or AS-120. The higher end artcores are amazing 100+.
